When Cryptids Meet Collecting
Cryptids have existed in folklore for generations, but their legends have expanded far beyond books and eyewitness reports.
From films and artwork to games and collectibles, mysterious creatures like Bigfoot, Mothman, and the Loch Ness Monster have become icons of modern monster culture.
One of the most unique examples of this is MetaZoo, a trading card game that brings cryptids, folklore, and legendary creatures into the world of collectible cards.
🃏 Starting My MetaZoo Collection
As someone who is still relatively new to MetaZoo, I recently decided to begin collecting some of the original cards featuring my favourite cryptids.
Rather than trying to complete an entire set, my goal is to build a small collection focused on the legendary creatures that inspire the content here at Cryptid Legends.
For my first batch, I ordered a selection of original MetaZoo cards from Big Orbit Cards, with most costing between just £0.10 and £0.75 each.
The haul included fascinating creatures such as the Honey Island Swamp Monster, Mogollon Monster, Skunk Ape, Batsquatch, Lake Worth Monster, Minnesota Iceman, Pope Lick Monster, Squonk, Enfield Monster, Green Clawed Monster, Dublin Lake Monster, and Spring-Heeled Jack, along with several other lesser-known cryptids.
One of the things I immediately enjoyed about MetaZoo is its willingness to celebrate not only famous cryptids like Bigfoot, but also the many forgotten regional legends that have become part of local folklore across North America and beyond.
As my collection grows, I’ll be showcasing more of these cards here on Cryptid Legends, exploring both the artwork and the fascinating stories that inspired them.

Unlike many cryptid legends that exist only through eyewitness accounts, the Minnesota Iceman became famous because of something far more unusual, a mysterious frozen humanoid specimen displayed before thousands of curious spectators during the 1960s.
The creature was presented inside a large block of ice at fairs and exhibitions across the United States.
Witnesses claimed the frozen figure appeared remarkably lifelike, describing a large, hairy, human-like being with a broad face, heavy brow, long arms, and an ape-like appearance. The strange display quickly attracted attention from both the public and researchers interested in unexplained creatures.
The case gained further attention when respected cryptozoologists Bernard Heuvelmans and Ivan T. Sanderson examined the specimen. Both researchers believed they had witnessed something unusual and considered the possibility that the frozen figure could represent an unknown primate or surviving relic hominid.
However, the mystery became even stranger when the original specimen was reportedly removed and later replaced by a less convincing replica. This fuelled decades of debate, with some believing the Minnesota Iceman was an elaborate hoax created for publicity, while others questioned whether the original display contained something genuinely unexplained.
Today, the Minnesota Iceman remains one of cryptozoology’s most famous controversies, a strange story where folklore, science, mystery, and popular culture all collide.

While many cryptids become famous through years of sightings and repeated encounters, the Green Clawed Beast is remembered because of one strange and unsettling incident that took place along the Ohio River.
The legend began in the summer of 1955 near Evansville, Indiana, when Naomi Johnson went swimming in the river with her friend and children.
During the peaceful afternoon, Johnson suddenly felt something grab her leg beneath the water. She later described the sensation as a powerful grip from a strange hand-like appendage with a rough, furry texture and claw-like fingers.
According to Johnson’s account, whatever had grabbed her pulled her underwater. She managed to break free and reach the surface, only to be dragged beneath the water again moments later. The attack ended when she was able to reach her friend’s inner tube and escape the creature’s grip.
After returning to shore, Johnson reportedly had scratches and marks on her leg, along with a strange green-coloured hand-shaped stain that became one of the most famous details of the encounter. The story soon spread beyond the local area, appearing in newspapers and becoming part of Indiana folklore.
Unlike many cryptid cases, Naomi Johnson never claimed to have seen the creature itself. The mystery comes entirely from what she felt beneath the water, leaving open countless possibilities.
Some have suggested explanations ranging from underwater animals or debris in the river to an unknown creature, while believers continue to view it as one of America’s strangest aquatic cryptid encounters.
Today, the Green Clawed Beast remains a fascinating example of how a single unexplained encounter can become a lasting regional legend.

Unlike many cryptid legends that originate from remote wilderness sightings, the Pope Lick Monster is a creature born from local folklore, urban legend, and one of Kentucky’s most infamous mysterious locations.
The legend centres around the Pope Lick Creek area near Louisville, Kentucky, particularly the old railroad trestle bridge that became associated with frightening stories of a strange humanoid creature said to inhabit the area.
Descriptions of the monster vary, but it is often portrayed as a bizarre goat-like humanoid figure with the body of a man and the features of a goat.
According to local legend, the creature is said to have mysterious origins, with stories ranging from a circus sideshow performer who escaped or was abandoned, to darker tales involving curses and supernatural forces.
Unlike traditional cryptid reports that focus on possible unknown animals, the Pope Lick Monster exists mainly within the realm of folklore and modern monster storytelling.
The most famous part of the legend involves the railroad trestle itself. Stories claim that the creature uses hypnosis, imitation, or other supernatural abilities to lure unsuspecting visitors onto the tracks.
These tales became especially popular among local teenagers and horror enthusiasts, adding to the bridge’s reputation as a dangerous and mysterious place.
While there is no confirmed evidence that a creature inhabits Pope Lick Creek, the legend has remained popular for decades because it combines classic monster folklore with a real-world location.
The bridge, the warnings surrounding it, and the frightening imagery of a goat-like humanoid have helped the Pope Lick Monster become one of Kentucky’s most recognisable regional legends.

Not every cryptid legend begins with an unexplained creature encounter. Some begin as stories created by people, but become so deeply embedded in local folklore that they take on a life of their own.
The Selbyville Swamp Monster is one of Delaware’s most unusual cryptid legends, originating from the mysterious wetlands of the Great Cypress Swamp near Selbyville, Delaware.
In 1964, the local Delmarva News published reports and a photograph claiming that a strange, hairy, ape-like creature had been spotted roaming the swamp.
The stories quickly captured public attention, with reports spreading of a mysterious beast frightening motorists along nearby roads, particularly around Route 54.
The truth behind the creature was eventually revealed to be a carefully created local hoax. Newspaper editor Ralph Grapperhaus and local resident Fred Stevens had created the monster as a publicity stunt, with Stevens reportedly wearing a homemade costume and appearing as the mysterious swamp creature.
However, the Selbyville Swamp Monster became something much bigger than a simple newspaper prank.
The story captured the imagination of the local community and became a lasting piece of Delaware folklore. Even after the hoax was revealed decades later, the legend continued to fascinate residents and cryptid enthusiasts.
The Selbyville Swamp Monster is a perfect example of how cryptid legends evolve. Whether born from eyewitness mystery, ancient folklore, or even a clever publicity stunt, these stories become part of our cultural imagination and continue to be retold by new generations.
