However, the repeated description of an apparent hand and the struggle associated with the original account make this explanation impossible to establish retrospectively.

Creature from the Black Lagoon had been released in 1954, shortly before the 1955 encounter, and later accounts connect Johnson’s recollections with the film’s amphibious monster.
That does not establish that the original incident was inspired by the movie.
But it provides an obvious cultural environment in which an unexplained underwater encounter could acquire the characteristics of a green, humanoid, aquatic monster.
